National Hate Crimes Strategy and Action Plan
Project title:
Creating a National Hate Crimes Strategy and Action Plan
Aim of the project:
In recent years the number of hate crimes have sharply increased in Hungary. This affects most importantly national and ethnic minorities – especially Roma people, sexual minorities, and immigrants and asylum seekers. The situations is made worse by the fact the Hungarian authorities often do not implement already existing legislation in this area. The aim of the project is to enhance the position of hate crime victims by strengthening the efforts of relevant authorities via the adoption of a national hate crimes strategy and action plan.
Planned activities:
During the project we will do preparatory work and draft a national hate crimes strategy and action plan. To achieve this we will:
- organize public forums among social groups affected by hate crimes to collect their experiences and suggestions;
- conduct interviews with relevant stakeholders to identify opportunities and barriers;
- prepare a summary report outlining problems in the state's response to hate crimes;
- set up a working group with the participation of NGOs and public authorities to draft a national hate crimes strategy and action plan.
