Between March 2020 and February 2022, Háttér Society is implementing the project  “JUST EU: equality and justice for LGBTI citizens through strategic litigation”  in cooperation with Accept (Romania), ILGA-Europe, LGL (Lithuania), and LGBT DEYSTVIE (Bulgaria).

The aim of the project is to enforce the equality principle regarding sexual orientation and gender identity, with a focus on employment discrimination, access to goods and services, the recognition and protection of the family life of LGBTI EU citizens with regards to their freedom of movement, combating hate speech and hate crimes, and ensuring rights for LGBTI victims of violence.

The project strengthens substantive legal knowledge on LGBTI fundamental rights, as well as legal and non-legal skills needed by legal professionals and NGOs to successfully engage in strategic litigation and communication at national and EU level. Therefore JUST EU aims to improve enforcement of LGBTI rights under EU law & EU Charter, through training, sharing best practices, and coordinating as an expert network identifying and combating systemic human rights breaches.

Specific activities of the project include:

  • developing a knowledge hub on LGBTI rights;
  • campaigning for LGBTI equality in the EU through litigation,
  • providing coaching and support to national litigation networks.
  • organizing national trainings,
  • publishing four national and a general report.

The project is supported by the Justice Programme of the European Commission; Háttér Society receives 35 875 euro of the funding.
