Removal of Queer Curtain - 30 years of democracy for LGBTI people

Between October 2019 and April 2021, Háttér Society participates in the project Removal of Queer Curtain - 30 years of democracy for LGBTI people, which focuses on the history of LGBTQI people in Eastern and Central Europe.  

The aims of the project are: 

• raising awareness to the history of the LGBTQI community; 
• showcasing how LGBTQI people lived in the Central and Eastern European region (the former Czechoslovakia, Hungary and former Yugoslavia) in the 20th century, and how the regime change in 1989 affected their lives; 
• presenting the changes in regards to human rights that occured in the region in the last decades.

Activities include:

• curating a multilingual moving exhibition about the 20th century history of the LGBTQI people in Central and Eastern Europe;
• conducting and publishing oral history video interviews
• creating a theater play built in real life personal stories.

The implementation of the project is co-funded by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Commission and the Visegrad International Fund, with 123 320 EUR, out of which Háttér Society receives 8200 EUR.
