Wishing Well - Legyél Jól! A transznemű emberek jólléte és egészsége

Between March 2024 and April 2026, we are coordinating the implementation of the project Wishing Well: Improving the Health and Wellbeing of Transgender people in Hungary. The project is co-funded by the European Union.

To mitigate the harmful consequences of the unavailability of legal gender recognition, we launched a complex project that assesses the health needs of transgender people in Hungary, provides them with community and social support, increases their visibility, and trains health professionals on how to work with them, with a special attention to mental health.

Project partners:

  • Amnesty International Hungary
  • Szabadnem (Prizma Community)

Other Collaborators:

  • Hungarian LGBT+ Medicine Society
  • Hungarian Psychological Association LGBTQ+ Psychology Section

Priorities of the project:

Creating a trans-inclusive healthcare by

  • needs assessment among trans people through participatory action research;
  • advocating for the introduction of the modernised version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), which no longer considers trans identities a mental disorder;
  • translating, adapting and promoting the newest edition of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care;
  • training psychologists and other health professionals on the healthcare needs of trans people.

Strengthening trans communities, facilitating the self-organisation of local support groups, and enhancing their visibility by

  • holding monthly online community events for the trans community in Hungary;
  • organising in-person community meetings 8 times in Budapest and 4 times outside of the capital;
  • organising the Transgender Day of Visibility (Trans Pride) in 2025 and 2026.

Guaranteeing equal access to basic services and reducing discrimination by

  • offering social counseling aimed at assisting trans people in everyday administrative matters and health care-related questions.

The project is funded by the European Union. The project receives financial support of EUR 173 120, of which Háttér receives EUR 77 633.
