Achieving Intersex Equality and Justice: A study on the experiences of people with variations in sex characteristics

From August 2021 to November 2022 our organization is coordinating a study on the experiences of people with variations in sex characteristics.

This study will enable DG-JUST to understand more about the experiences of people with variations in sex characteristics across EU-27. This includes experiences of discrimination in all fields of life from education and employment, to later life and other areas.

The study consists of:

• A literature review which will focus on the composition of the intersex population in the EU, the socioeconomic position of intersex people in the EU, the medical policies and health status of intersex people in the EU, the legal situation of intersex people in the EU, best practices, and any literature on how these factors are related.
• Qualitative interviews and an online survey to gain an accurate and in-depth understanding of the situation of and challenges faced by intersex people and their families.
• Mapping of medical practices to understand the prevalence and types of non-vital medical interventions performed without consent.
• Analysis of the link between legal and medical practices, health status and the socio-economic position of intersex people to aid the identification of evidence of best practices to advance the inclusion of intersex people in society.
