Between June 2024 and May 2025 Háttér Society’s Legal Program implements a project with the support of Digital Freedom Fund aimed at mapping the prevalence of censoring LGBTQI online content in Hungarian public spaces. The research is meant to underpin future litigation before domestic and European courts.
Between June 2024 and September 2025 Háttér Society is working on a research and capacity building project entitled Challenging Anti-LGBTQI Rhetoric in Hungary.
This report summarizes the results of a nationally representative public opinion poll conducted by the Median Public Opinion and Market Research Institute in November 2023. Háttér Társaság commissioned the research. The research covered topics such as the general framing of homosexuality, social attitudes related to coming out, support for marriage and parenting by same-sex couples, legal gender recognition for trans people, views on the so-called "child protection" law, and opinions about proactive measures by public bodies and employers.
Compared to 2019, the acceptance of the LGBTQI community in Hungary has shown a tentative increase. More and more people are aware that LGBTQI people face exclusion, with a coextensive increase in the number of people who would feel comfortable in the company of an LGBTQI person in different areas of life. More Hungarians are also in favour of young people learning about minority identities.

In the framework of our international project Speak Out we conducted an online survey in June-August 2019 which examined the experience of LGBTQI people with online hate speech and hate crimes.
The report produced in the framework of the BringIn project reviews the Hungarian legal environment related to intersex people, including legislation on health interventions, hate crimes and discrimination, as well as the personal experiences and needs of intersex people based on interviews with professionals, intersex people and their families.
